X Series: Road Mode (Dashcam)

Applicable Models: X4, X4 Air, X5, and X6

The Road Mode (Dashcam) is a recording mode that allows you to perform loop recording within user-defined storage space. When the storage reaches its limit, the latest recording automatically overwrites the earliest recordings made in this mode, ensuring continuous recording of the most recent media. This article provides detailed instructions for using this mode and some FAQ answers to help you get started easily.

How to enable the Road Mode

X6

Press the virtual button in the lower-right corner to open the shooting mode selection screen, select "360" > swipe left or right to find “Road Mode”, then tap to switch to this mode.

X5, X4 Air, and X4

Tap the shooting mode icon in the bottom-left corner of the camera screen, and select "Road Mode" under the 360 Mode.

Please note:

  • Media captured in the Road Mode is stored only within the Loop Space.
  • To ensure the feature works properly and avoid issues caused by insufficient space, the minimum loop space requirement for the Road Mode is:
    • X6: 4.6GB
    • X5 and X4 Air: 6.9GB
    • X4: 7.6GB
  • If you switch to other recording modes during shooting, the media may occupy the available space within the allocated loop space. When you return to the Road Mode, the camera will prompt that space is insufficient.

How to set the loop space / storage space

  1. Tap the parameter area at the bottom of the preview page to enter the settings page.
  2. Adjust the "Loop Space" storage size. The system will automatically calculate the available loop duration based on the resolution and frame rate.
  3. Under "Power-off Charging" / "Charging when turned off", choose whether to automatically start recording when powered on.
  4. Enable/disable the "Timestamp Watermark" to display the shooting time in the exported video.

Please note: The available recording time for the currently set loop space is displayed in real time at the bottom of the preview page.

FAQ

1. What is the storage logic of Road Mode?
  • The camera records in 1min clips, creating multiple 1min video files.
  • When the available loop space is full and recording continues, the newest 1min video will overwrite the oldest 1min video.
  • If the final clip is less than 1min when recording stops, the camera will still save it without overwriting any already completed clips. As a result, the final generated video may exceed the set loop duration.
  • After each recording session, the 1min clips are automatically combined into a complete video, which can be exported via the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio.

2. Does the Road Mode affect video quality?

No. This mode only changes the storage management method and does not affect video clarity. You can use it with confidence.

3. Does the Road Mode automatically delete media on the microSD card?

The Road Mode only automatically overwrites the earliest videos recorded in this mode when the storage space is full. Media captured in other modes will not be deleted or overwritten.

4. Is the Road Mode supported in the Single-Lens Mode?

No, this is not supported in the Single-Lens Mode currently. We will continuously optimize our products to provide you with a better user experience. Thank you for your understanding and support!

5. How can I set up the camera to achieve a similar effect to commercial dash cameras?
  1. Back up and clear the microSD card

Before formatting the microSD card, copy all important media from the microSD card to a computer or other storage device to avoid data loss. Delete all media on the microSD card to ensure all space is available for the Road Mode.

  1. Configure camera parameters

Enter "Road Mode" on the camera, and adjust the loop space to the maximum value (covering the entire storage range of the microSD card). Select the desired resolution and frame rate, then start recording.

6. How is the minimum loop space calculated in the Road Mode? Why does the loop duration vary each time? Can the minimum loop space be set manually?

The minimum loop space for the Road Mode cannot be set manually. The minimum loop duration shown on the camera screen is automatically estimated based on the selected resolution and frame rate. Different parameters produce different video file sizes, so the loop duration will vary accordingly.

7. Is the minimum loop space permanently occupied? Does it affect the overall storage capacity of the microSD card?

The minimum loop space is only a requirement for the loop space. Space not used for the Road Mode recording can be used normally by other shooting modes and is not permanently occupied.

  • If other modes use the space originally allocated for Road Mode, the system will prompt you to reset the loop space when you switch back to the Road Mode.
  • If the remaining space on the microSD card is insufficient, the Road Mode cannot be used.

8. Will multiple clips recorded in the Road Mode be automatically merged into one file in the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio? Is editing individual clips supported?

Separate recording sessions generate independent media files. They are not automatically merged in the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio. You can edit each file individually.

9. In the Road Mode, if "Charging when turned off" is set to "Start Recording", will recording continue after power is disconnected?

At the moment of power disconnection, the device screen will display a countdown prompt: "2s Power disconnected. Recording will stop, and the device will shut down shortly."

  • If you want to stop recording and shut down, no further action is needed. The device will automatically stop recording, save the media, and shut down after the countdown ends.
  • If you want to continue recording, tap the "Cancel" button on the screen during the countdown to stop the shutdown process and continue recording.
