X Series: Video Noise and Poor Wind Noise Reduction Performance
X Series: Video Noise and Poor Wind Noise Reduction Performance
Applicable Models: ONE X, X2, X3, X4, X4 Air, and X5
Scenario 1: An incompatible external microphone is used
If you are using an external microphone for audio recording, first check whether it is included in the official compatibility list.
Please refer to: X Series: Bluetooth Device Compatibility
If the external microphone is not on the compatibility list, it may cause video noise or poor wind noise reduction performance. You can improve the audio recording result with the following methods:
- Swipe down from the top of the camera screen to access the "Shortcut" menu > swipe right to find "Audio Settings" > enable the "Auto Wind Noise Reduction" mode.
- Make sure the camera firmware is updated to the latest version.
Please refer to: X Series: Check and Update Firmware Version
- For optimal audio recording experience, it is recommended to use microphones on the official compatibility list.
Scenario 2: A compatible external microphone or built-in microphone is used
If you are using a compatible external microphone (listed in the compatibility list) or the camera's built-in microphone, yet still encounter video noise and unsatisfactory wind noise reduction, please troubleshoot according to the symptoms below.
Symptom 1: Excessive wind noise or poor wind noise reduction performance
- Low-frequency roaring noise in videos: Sound in the 50Hz to 200Hz frequency band, similar to a rushing wind roar.
- High-frequency hissing noise in videos: Harsh static sound above 2kHz, similar to white noise.
Solution
You can improve audio quality with the following solutions:
- Swipe down from the top of the camera screen to access the "Shortcut" menu > swipe right to find "Audio Settings" > enable the "Auto Wind Noise Reduction" mode.
- For X5 and X4 Air, export videos via the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio to apply AI-powered noise reduction optimization.
- When shooting with X5, face the camera's rear side (with the Steel Mesh) toward the wind for better physical wind shielding.
- It is recommended to use official Insta360 windproof accessories such as a Wind Muff. Take care not to block the lens during use.
Symptom 2: Persistent abnormal noise caused by structure-borne sound in videos
A continuous distinct tapping sound or vibration noise (1kHz to 3kHz) appears in the video.
Solution
This issue may occur due to gaps between the camera and attached accessories, causing vibration resonance to be picked up by the microphone. Please troubleshoot as follows:
- Check if the Lens Guard is installed and ensure it is fitted correctly.
- If other accessories are used, verify they are properly mounted and tightened to eliminate gaps between the accessories and the camera.
Symptom 3: Intermittent no sound or abnormal noise in videos
The camera occasionally records videos with no audio or random abnormal background noise.
Solution
This may be caused by a faulty microphone or firmware malfunction. Please first update the camera to the latest firmware version and check if the issue is resolved.
Please refer to: X Series: Check and Update Firmware Version
Symptom 4: X5 camera footage has loud wind noise after direct export from SD card or third-party software
When "Auto Wind Noise Reduction" is enabled on X5, footage exported through the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio will be optimized by the software's AI-powered noise reduction algorithm. If you do not use official editing software, wind noise cannot be effectively suppressed. For example, the human voice may become quieter in the Voice Focus Mode; or audio may sound faint and unclear without immersive spatial audio effects in the 360 Audio Mode.
Solution
If you do not export footage via the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio, follow the steps below for better noise reduction:
- Swipe down from the top of the camera screen to access the "Shortcut" menu > swipe right to find "Audio Settings" > enable the "Auto Wind Noise Reduction" mode.
- Export the video first with the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio, then perform further editing using third-party software.
