X Series: FOV Settings

Applicable Models: X3, X4, X4 Air, and X5

The Field of View (FOV) feature allows you to flexibly switch between different FOV modes such as UltraWide and MegaView based on various shooting scenarios like daily vlogs, outdoor adventures, or subject close-ups. This enables the shooting perspective to better suit your needs, allowing you to easily capture high-quality media with a natural look and immersive feel and meeting diverse creative demands.

How to set FOV

On the shooting preview screen, tap the "FOV" icon on the right to switch between FOV options for shooting.

Introduction to Field of View (FOV)

  • MaxView: The widest field of view with distortion, suitable for shooting open natural landscapes such as canyons and grasslands.
  • ActionView: Compresses height space, ideal for shooting for sports scenarios like skiing and cycling from a first-person perspective.
  • MegaView: Suitable for wide-field shooting of urban buildings. Vertical distortion is reduced in 16:9 / 2.35:1 ratio for more natural and realistic results.
  • UltraWide: Ultra-wide field of view, ideal for mountaineering, hiking, and other outdoor activities.
  • Dewarp: This mode offers a wider FOV with only minor distortion, which is suitable for scenarios like skiing and vlogging.
  • Linear: This mode features no image distortion, suitable for daily vlogs that aim to emphasize the human subject.
  • Wide Angle: Distortion-free wide field of view.

Feature Description

360 Mode

insta360

360°

Through image stitching, it breaks through the limitations of the lens viewing angle, making it suitable for capturing magnificent natural scenery, tall buildings, or group scenes.

Steady Cam Mode

insta360

150°

Ideal for landscape and architectural photos, or any occasions requiring a wider field of view.

  • In the Video Mode, the UltraWide viewing angle is up to 148°.
  • In the Photo Mode, the UltraWide viewing angle can reach up to 160°.

InstaPano *Only available for standard photo and HDR photo

insta360

270°

InstaPano provides a wider field of view than a standard wide-angle lens. When using this feature, users can capture expansive landscapes, city skylines, or indoor environments.

FAQ

1. Will choosing different FOV modes (e.g., "MegaView", "UltraWide", and "Dewarp") affect image sharpness?

No, different FOV modes do not affect image sharpness.

2. Can I correct distorted/fisheye photos to a normal perspective after shooting?
  • For 360 photos: Yes. You can adjust to your desired perspective in the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio before exporting.
  • For Wide-angle photos: No, perspective cannot be modified in post-production. It's recommended to select your preferred perspective mode in the camera before shooting.

3. [For X5, X4 Air, X4, and X3] When playing back media/thumbnails on the camera, what is the default camera orientation? Does it default to using the front or rear camera? In the 360 Mode, the camera captures media using the front lens, but during playback, it shows the media from the rear lens. Why does this happen?

X5, X4 Air, and X4

  • For video: The orientation of the camera is not fixed when playing back. The camera will automatically select the thumbnail image based on the highlight scenes, and the thumbnail might show footage from any of the lenses.
  • For photo: By default, the thumbnail is taken from the rear camera (the one not on the screen side).

X3

Defaults to the screen-side camera orientation.

4. Why is there no FOV+ (external stabilization) option in the X4 single lens mode?

On the X4 camera, Insta360 has set the FOV+ (external stabilization) option specifically for the FreeFrame Mode, allowing you to flexibly adapt to different shooting scenarios. Its effect is equivalent to the FOV+ Mode on the X3 camera, where you can still enjoy stable image results when using this mode.

Please note: The stabilization and stitching for the X4 Me Mode (2.7K@24/25/30fps, 1080p@24/25/30fps) are completed inside the camera and cannot be adjusted in post-production.

5. What are the benefits of the newly added FOV selection function for X4 in the 360 Lens Mode? Why is FOV now available on X4?

X4 introduces a selectable FOV function for the first time in the 360 Lens Mode. It allows you to choose the desired FOV directly during shooting, preview the effects in real time, and quickly adjust to the optimal shooting angle, making your creative process more convenient and precise.

6. What is the difference between the standard FOV Mode and the FOV+ Mode on X3?

FOV Mode:

  • It is an upgraded in-camera stabilization mode that directly records MP4 videos with the FlowState stabilization feature.
  • It supports up to 4K resolution and uses basic FOV and in-camera stabilization features.

FOV+ Mode:

  • After video recording, post-production such as stabilization, Horizon Lock, and aspect ratio adjustment is required in the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio.
  • It supports up to 2.7K resolution and offers a wider perspective than the basic FOV, with an additional option of MaxView Mode (170°).
