Description

After downloading or exporting files from the camera to a phone via the Insta360 app, the phone's mobile data usage statistics show that the Insta360 app consumed a significant amount of mobile data.

Reason

This is primarily due to how the phone's system tracks data usage, and the displayed consumption does not reflect actual mobile data usage. The specific reasons are as follows:

  • Android phones: When connected to the camera's Wi-Fi for downloading or exporting, the size of files transferred over Wi-Fi might also be counted towards data usage statistics, even though no mobile data is actually consumed.
  • iPhone: iPhone's data usage query combines both cellular data and wireless LAN usage. Even if an increase in data consumption is shown, it might include data transferred over Wi-Fi and does not necessarily mean your cellular data was consumed.

Solution

If you wish to verify this, you can perform the following test:

  1. Remove the SIM card from your phone.
  2. Connect to the camera's Wi-Fi and download or export files via the Insta360 app.
  3. Check your phone's data usage statistics, and you will likely notice that the reported data consumption continues to increase.

With the SIM card removed, the phone cannot use mobile data. The fact that the usage still increases demonstrates that the added usage comes from Wi-Fi transfers, not from your mobile data usage. You can also contact your mobile carrier to confirm whether your plan's data allowance was actually consumed.
